I. Scope
This policy applies to all schools that appoint and/or employ post-doctoral fellows and/or part-time non-tenure eligible faculty.
II. Purpose and Policy Statement
The purpose of this policy is to establish a university-wide requirement for the evaluation of post-doctoral fellows and part-time non-tenure eligible faculty.
III. Definitions
Part-time NTE (non-tenure eligible) faculty: The definition of part-time NTE faculty as established in the W&M Faculty Handbook is adopted for purposes of this policy.
Post-doctoral fellows: The definition of post-doctoral fellows as established in the W&M Faculty Handbook is adopted for purposes of this policy.
Schools means the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; the Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences; the William & 玛丽 Law School; the Raymond A. Mason School of Business; the School of Computing, Data Sciences, and Physics; and the School of Education.
IV. Policy
A. Evaluation Procedures
Each of the schools shall establish and implement evaluation procedures for post-doctoral fellows and part-time NTE faculty members.
B. Eligibility criteria for evaluation
1. Evaluation is required once the individual has been employed in their current capacity (i.e., as a post-doctoral fellow or a part-time NTE faculty member) at W&M for three or more semesters (inclusive of the current semester) without a break in service of a year or more.
2. When evaluation is required, the individual shall be evaluated at least annually.
3. If an individual is not employed during a semester/term/academic year in which they are scheduled for an evaluation, they must be evaluated during their next employment contract.
V. Enforcement
Deans shall ensure compliance with this policy. Deans’ offices shall maintain records tracking the last date of evaluation for each individual subject to this policy. Documentation constituting evidence that evaluations have occurred as required by this policy shall be maintained within deans’ offices in the same manner as evaluations of other faculty members are maintained.VI. Authority
The W&M Faculty Assembly reviewed this policy and adopted a motion on December 10, 2024, recommending establishment of this policy by the Provost in a manner such that the policy is not a component of the W&M Faculty Handbook.This policy is approved by the Provost in accordance with Article X of the Bylaws of the Board of Visitors and the Policy on Creating Whole University Policies & Procedures.
