The decision for expulsion was made by the Kappa Sigma Supreme Executive Committee
following a joint investigation between W&M and Kappa Sigma into multiple hazing reports
involving the Chapter. W&M led efforts to partner with the International Office of Kappa Sigma
for the joint investigation and fully supports the International Office's decision to expel the
organization.
This action means that the Nu Chapter and its members can no longer operate in the name of the
Kappa Sigma Fraternity or use any of the fraternity’s names or derivatives, symbols or signage to
denote any affiliation with Kappa Sigma. The decision to expel the chapter also means the
removal of membership in Kappa Sigma for all undergraduate members.
The reported hazing behavior is inconsistent with not only Kappa Sigma standards but also the
W&M hazing policy. In light of the expulsion by Kappa Sigma and in alignment with university
policy, the Office of Student Leadership Development is withdrawing the chapter’s status as a
Recognized Student Organization. Loss of status as a recognized student organization means the
chapter may not use the university name or any symbols or signage that would denote that they
are a Recognized Student Organization at W&M. Additionally, the chapter is no longer eligible
for Special Interest Housing or membership in the Interfraternity Council, and its members may
no longer attend any Fraternity & Sorority Life events.
The international Kappa Sigma Fraternity has indicated their desire to reestablish a chapter at
William & 玛丽 in the future and W&M will work in partnership with the fraternity to identify
the appropriate time for return.
William & 玛丽 is the birthplace of the American college fraternity and has a long tradition of
scholarship, leadership, service, and community. Behavior inconsistent with these values, and
William & 玛丽’s values have no place in our community.
