DeepSeek AI is no longer permitted on W&M’s network and devices

Effective February 18, 2025, DeepSeek AI and other applications owned by the Chinese company Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Basic Technology Research Co., Ltd are prohibited on the university’s network (including VIMS) and university-owned devices. This restriction is the result of a new executive order effective February 11, 2025. Any employees, students or contractors who have downloaded or installed the Deep Seek application on a device owned or issued by the university needs to uninstall and delete it immediately. Contract administrators must communicate this directive to any contractors who have access to university-owned or issued devices.
To protect valuable information and reduce possible cybersecurity threats associated with using DeepSeek, W&M has prohibited access to and use of these apps while connected to the W&M network.
The university will continue to monitor any developments regarding DeepSeek and will communicate any modifications to this policy that result from changing circumstances.
Summary of restrictions
- Governor Youngkin issued an executive order on February 11, 2025 that requires all state-affiliated entities to stop using DeepSeek AI on state-issued devices or state-maintained networks.
- DeepSeek AI is banned on the W&M network and on university-owned devices, effective February 18, 2025.
- All units are required to instruct their contractors, who are issued university-owned devices, not to visit the DeepSeek AI website on any government-issued devices including state-issued cell phones, laptops or other devices capable of connecting to the internet, except for public safety purposes.
