Vanguard Cording Ceremony
The Vanguard Cording Ceremony is William & 玛丽’s pre-commencement celebration honoring the achievements of first-generation and limited-income (FGLI) graduating students. Started in 2023 as a Senior Recognition and End of Year Celebration, this ceremony provides a dedicated space to recognize their resilience, accomplishments, and contributions to the campus community. The Vanguard Cording Ceremony celebrates the journeys of FGLI students, acknowledging the barriers they have overcome and the legacy they leave behind as they step into their next chapter. All graduating students will receive a FGLI gold and silver cord, to wear during commencement, celebrating their resilience and the unique experiences they bring to the William & 玛丽 community.
AAA First Generation Honors Society
During the Vanguard Cording Ceremony, we also take the opportunity to induct a select number of new graduating members into the Tri-Alpha First-Generation Honors Society who may not have had the chance to be inducted previously. This special moment ensures that their achievements are recognized, adding another layer of honor to their already remarkable journey.
All graduating members and inductees will receive a complimentary Tri-Alpha blue and silver cord, symbolizing their commitment to excellence in addition to their FGLI gold and silver cord.
Graduate students are also welcome to attend the ceremony, though they will be responsible for covering the cost of their own membership. For undergraduate students, membership in the Tri-Alpha First-Gen Honors Society is free, further emphasizing the commitment to honoring their academic and personal achievements.
